Nutrient dense snacks combining your macronutrients(protein, complex carbohydrates, good fats) are best. Complex carbs have longer chains so they stay in your blood stream longer allowing a steady release of energy when needed, and keep you feeling full. Simple carbs go into your bloodstream fast and leave fast, allowing your body to crash and get hungrier quicker. Whether you are craving sweet or salty, I've put together a list that will satisfy both. Some examples of combining the right nutrient snacks are below:
-Hummus(fat and protein) with vegetables-
-Mashed avocado with lime juice and spices on whole grain bread(Ezekiel is my favorite) with an egg
*Ezekiel is sprouted grain bread. There is no refining, so all the nutrients are kept.
"-Trader Joe's Chunky Guacomole Dip" with vegetables or whole grain crackers
(contains all natural ingredients: avocados, greek yogurt, tomatoes, spices)
-Homemade protein balls: oats, nut butter, honey, flax seeds, etc.
-Seeds and or nuts with raisins or fruit
-Greek yogurt(Fage plain) with berries and nut butter or nuts/seeds
-Hard boiled egg with fruit or veggies
-Nut butter on whole grain bread or crackers("CrunchMaster Multi-Seed Crackers)
-Frozen grapes with nuts
-Dairy parfaits with greek yogurt, cottage cheese, ricotta cheese or goat cheese toped with honey, ----Nuts and chia seeds(pistachios are good for nighttime snack as they produce a calming effect)
-Dark chocolate almonds(just a few!)
-Protein pops(ice pops made with protein powder, almond milk and nut butter and or fruit)
-Apple butter on whole grain toast
-Zucchini Nut Bread
-Overnight Oats: Oats with almond milk, chi or flax seeds, apples or raisins, nuts and cinnamon
-Homemade applesauce with cinnamon on whole grain rice cake
-Smoothies: greek yogurt, almond milk, honey, nut butter and fruit
-Frozen Banana Ice Cream Dessert: frozen bananas, almond milk, nut butter, vanilla all blended together. Stir in nuts or raisins after blended and pour into container to freeze.
